Government officials in Orissa, which is located on the east coast of India are encouraging traditional potters to make terracotta pots part of their trade. It is felt that this will help to improve sales and living conditions in the country as there has been such a demand for the product in the more cosmopolitan cities in India.
The idea is to convert potters into terracotta artisans so they can meet the demand for terracotta pots and also because they are not making enough money from the products that they are currently selling. Full training is being provided for those who are interested in branching out so that they can develop their skills and show the tourists and wealthier residents of the country that they can provide them with the products they want.
The reason why traditional potters are struggling so much to sell their products is because there are currently so many alternatives to what they make available. This has resulted in many of the potters who are living in Orissa to lead a difficult and struggling life because people would rather collect designer pottery products for their homes. Terracotta pots have always been a favourite amongst anyone who collects pottery which is why the government chose this material to re - train their potters in. It is hoped that everyone will appreciate the craftsmanship, time and effort that goes into making the product and choose to buy off local potters rather than large shop chains.
There have been many other factors which have contributed to the fact that traditional potters are now struggling so much. The fact that many of the markets where they can sell their products are too far away so they either can't attend or it's very expensive to go there is one of the major reasons. This is further fuelled by the fact that there has been an increasing amount of non - availability of proper marketing outlets and there has been an overall reduced number of people buying these kinds of products.
One of the things that people in this position have resorted to is selling their products door to door as taking them to a market is too difficult. If they don't sell whatever they have made within a couple days then they have to carry them all the way back to their village. This is becoming more and more regular as less people are cooking in old fashioned earthen utensils and pots and more people are opting for stainless steel and aluminium utensils.
Training their potters to make terracotta pots is the Orissa governments last hope of trying to save this trades livelihood. It is thought as a positive step forward due to the fact that terracotta pots are so poular all around the world for many different reasons.

Discover Helpful Lawn Tools Information
Author: Paul Zayer
There are several types of lawn tools that could ease gardening and yard work. And when gardening work is easier we find ourselves out enjoying our lawn or garden much more often. Now we will talk about some lawn and garden tools that can make some jobs much easier.
A weed planter can make pulling weeds much easier. You may not mind squatting down to pull weeds, but if you are deciding not to pull a weed for some great weed pulling session, may be you would get advantage of using a weed planter. These nifty objects allow you to simply remove weeds without having to bend down or wrestle with weeds. If you have back problems a good weed puller is more like a must have.
Everything is kept crisp and neat with lawn tools like lawn edgers. Beside keeping borders even and kempt, edgers can delay the time you have before trimming excess growth in the garden. While keeping walkways safely clear of excess grass growth, edgers control grass growth of hardier strains like St. Augustine for the main lawn.
Aerators are a great way to easily aerate lawn and garden beds. Some aerators are simple straight forward aerators that are best suited for aerating lawns without breaking up the turf. These can also cut down on the development of thatch. I recommend something like the Garden Claw for gardens and flower beds. These little things are amazing for their power and simplicity. On one occasion I used one to do the entire first plowing session of a forty by forty foot double dug garden plot. It cut right through the thick grass as it crumbled the earth. Lawn tools like Garden Claws are also great for weeding around garden plants.
If you don't have all the time you need to do everything manually, planters and waterers are important tools to have. Planters can help shave off time if you have a busy planting schedule at different times of the year. You might want to install a timed sprinkler system for watering. Think of using t-tape and a daily timer if you have many garden or flower beds. This is inexpensive, conserves water and gives you free time! So as you can see having a nice lawn is a bit of work of course but I could say it is worth the effort. This is why it is also important to have the proper lawn tools.

People Advised To Take More Precautions With Gardens
Author: Mark Dawson
The majority of garden-owners are leaving themselves open to risk, it has been suggested.
According to RIAS, increasing numbers of Britons are spending money on their green space due to the rising popularity of makeover programmes and the concept of having an "outdoor room". Currently, it was revealed that budding Charlie Dimmocks and Alan Titchmarshes are splashing more than four billion pounds every year on plants, tools and other gardening paraphernalia.
One way consumers may find they are able to finance copying something that they have seen on the likes of Gardeners' World may be to take out a homeowner loan.
However, the insurance firm went on to indicate that many of these people are not taking steps to insure their property and possessions, so leaving themselves open to financial risk if they become the threat of crime. Pointing to research carried out by the Horticultural Trades Association and numerous other gardening organisations, in addition to the police, RIAS suggested that more than one million garden thefts take place each year. Furthermore, it was reported that "whatever its extent or scale, garden crime is on the rise and causes significant distress and financial loss."
Due to a lack of adequate cover, those wishing to repair their garden and replace stolen items may find that they are required to dip into their own pockets and purses to meet such expenses. This may put pressure on their ability to meet other types of financial demand such as credit card and loan bills, mortgage costs and council tax repayments.
Janet Connor, managing director for RIAS, said: "Sadly we are all now sitting targets for garden theft, yet people are not taking anywhere near enough precautions. Most home insurance policy holders don't realise that the garden and its contents may not be routinely protected by their existing cover in the event of theft, loss or damage and it's costing victims as much as 400 million pounds per year to replace stolen property. We strongly advise people to check their home insurance policy today and make sure additional provision for garden cover is added if it is not there already."
In an attempt to improve the security of their property, homeowners were also advised to fit security lighting and lay down gravel in their driveway and garden paths to deter prospective intruders. Gardeners were also recommended to use plants, such as holly, blackthorn and blue pine, which often contain thorns and can restrict access. The locking away of tools and equipment, protecting any moveable items from extreme weather conditions and removing garden centre tags from new plants were also put forward as means of reducing threats to green spaces. Furthermore, taking the time to ensure that an adequate home insurance policy is in place was recommended by RIAS.
For those looking to give their garden a spring makeover, a home loan may be of assistance. By taking out this loan, consumers can not only fit in the plants and flowers to make the outdoor space of their dreams, but also take steps to protect it from prospective thieves. In addition, the extra financial assistance that a loan provides could help homeowners to purchase a comprehensive insurance policy. A homeowner loan might also be of assistance to those wishing to carry out renovations within their homes. Earlier this month, Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, reported that more Britons are looking to convert attics, garages, basements and other rooms in their properties in an attempt to increase the amount of space.

Indoor Gardening for Kids - Start in a Dish
Author: Jude Wright
Indoor gardening for kids is actually much easier to handle than an outside garden. An indoor garden can be maintained in one area and you don't have to worry about taking your children out in the rain to pull weeds.
A root top garden is an easy way to start children on their first indoor gardening project. All you need to do is cut off the tops of root vegetables such as carrots, turnips or beets. Remove all of the leaves that are on the stems and cut the stems down to about half an inch. Then, put the stems in a shallow dish or pie plate and cover the bottom of the dish with water. Put decorative stones or pebbles in the bottom of the dish to make it more attractive.
Place the dish on a windowsill where it will get plenty of sunlight. Make sure you keep your root garden well watered. Leaves will begin to sprout in about two to three weeks.
Citrus fruits are also a good place to start for beginner indoor gardeners. Remove the seeds, which are called pips, from oranges, limes, lemons or grapefruit. Fill small planter pots with potting soil. Put two or three pips just beneath the surface of the soil in each pot. If you are planting more than one type of citrus seed, put small labels on each flower pot so that you can tell which kind of plant they are.
When you see the first shoots appear, place the pots in a sunny area such as a windowsill. After the plants have grown two pairs of leaves, carefully transfer each one to its own pot. It will take several months before you see the leaves transforming themselves into small citrus trees.
Another type of indoor garden for kids is greens, such as mustard or watercress. This type of garden is started by placing a paper towel on a dinner plate and soaking it with water. Tip the plate so that all excess water is poured off. Now, sprinkle watercress or mustard seeds over half of the paper towel. Cover the dish with another paper towel or another plate so that it is kept out of the light. When three days has passed, add more seeds to the other half of the paper towel that is on the bottom of the dish.
Make sure that the paper towel stays moist, but is not saturated with water. Re-cover the seeds for another few days. When that seedlings are about half an inch high, leave uncovered and place on a windowsill where they will get plenty of sunlight. Continue to keep the paper towels moist. Watercress and the mustard are ready for harvest when they are about three inches high. These greens are great used in salads or sandwiches.
You can also use any indoor plant as a child's first indoor garden. Since children love to watch for those first green leaves, it's more fun for them if you start the plants from seeds.
A child will remember his or her first garden with joy, and will want to graduate to an outdoor garden when older. So, teach your children the joys of gardening now for enjoyment that will last them a lifetime.

Moving to a Simpler Life, But Where Do I Start?
Author: Janet Nusbaum
Does the possibility of simplifying your life sound wonderful, but you can’t imagine how you will ever get from here to there? You are not alone! Regardless of how attractive it may seem, downsizing a lifetime can be an emotional and organizational nightmare.
To assure that the transition is less stressful, consider some of these downsizing tips:
Start with a plan
As the old adage goes “if you fail to plan you plan to fail.” This is so true when it comes to planning a successful downsizing move. I recommend starting a 3-ring binder with tabs to collect all the information in one place related to your move.
Start sorting now
Sorting through a lifetime of possessions can be overwhelming, but it must be done. Schedule regular sessions with yourself or with a Professional Organizer. Pick one area to start, ideally an area that you are not currently using. The important thing is to begin and to be consistent.
Decisions, decisions
How do you decide what to take and what to part with? In my work with clients, I always stress visualizing and planning for the lifestyle you are going to, not the lifestyle you are leaving. When moving to a smaller space, every item kept should have a function and a specific purpose. So let go of that 20-year-old console TV that may still work, but takes up half the wall and keep the newer portable cable-ready TV that can easily fit anywhere.
Make a floor plan
As soon as you have a new home confirmed, begin planning the floor plan. This makes the deciding what stays and what goes exercise so much easier. Even if you haven’t decided on a specific new home yet, you know that you are downsizing, so give some thought to what items you know you will take with you and plan main rooms like the living room, master bedroom and den.
What do I do with all this stuff?
It takes time to find homes for all the stuff you will not be moving with you. By starting early you will have the time to find just the right home for your belongings. Begin collecting resources like auction houses, antique stores that buy items, storage facilities and haulers. Also, make a list of all the items you will not be taking and begin talking with family and friends to see what they may be interested in purchasing or taking offer your hands.
Experience the emotions of the transition
It is understood that you will experience many emotions as you sort a lifetime of memories. This is normal. Moving is a transition at any age, but a downsizing move is often a transition from one lifestyle to another. All transitions contain an element of loss and excitement, as you experience once again memories of the past and anticipate the new life ahead. Expect to feel some grief along with your excitement and anticipation.

The Cat and the Crystal Figurine
Author: Lowry Mell
Anyone who is a cat owner can appreciate the old adage “Curiosity Killed the Cat.” and the cat behavior known as “Cat and Mouse Games.” Our cat, Doc, was a ten month old male that displayed a very high degree of curiosity, sniffing and examining anything new that came into the house,
Doc loved playing with a stuffed cat toy. He would swat it across the floor and pounce on it, catch the toy in a claw and throw it into the air and bat it down. This is a cat behavior that became good practice for the real event – cat and mouse games. We saw him repeat this with a field mouse he caught in the side yard. Doc had a good time playing with the mouse, but I don’t think the mouse enjoyed the game.
One Saturday morning I saw a disaster about to take place. I was on a stepladder cleaning the outside dining room windows. When I looked in the window I saw Doc sitting on the dining room table, something we don’t allow. Since cleaning windows is not my favorite job, I decided not to climb down the ladder to go chase him off the table until I had finished the windows.
When I leaned to the side and glanced back into the room, Doc was pouncing all over the table, jumped to the sideboard and was swatting the wall. The behavior amused me for a few moments until I realized what was happening. My wife had left a crystal figurine on the table. When I leaned to the side I had moved from blocking the rays of the sun. Doc was trying to catch the reflections from the figurine.
I laughed at the spectacle until Doc jumped back to the table and gave the figurine a good swat.. My heart sank when Doc swatted the figurine again and it rolled off the table closely followed by Doc. I jumped off the ladder and raced into the house thinking I have to clean up the shards of glass before Doc cuts himself. My next thought was how angry my wife is going to be that Doc had broken her favorite figurine.
As I entered the dining room I saw clothes on the floor from a turned over laundry basket. Doc was swatting and pouncing his way into the living room. I caught up to him and rescued the figurine. Much to my surprise, the figurine was not broken, chipped or damaged in any way. It was one of those moments of great relief. Apparently the figurine fell into the laundry basket and then onto the rugged floor when Doc jumped down into the basket.
You can say that there is a moral to this story – whether out of curiosity or cat games, cats and crystal figurines don’t mix. If you have cats, even older cats, your crystal figurines should be placed in a cabinet for safety. Apparently, the sparkle in crystal that we enjoy and appreciate is also an attraction for cats.
The irony in the case of the cat and the crystal figurine is the figurine was my wife’s favorite crystal cat figurine. Of course that didn’t matter to Doc. He just saw the object as fun waiting to happen. Incidentally, the mouse eluded Doc and got away.

The Symbolism of a Crystal Butterfly
Author: Lowry Mell
Throughout history humans have established a multitude of symbols covering a wide range of purposes. Those purposes can straddle the powerful symbols of religion or the simplest such as a first baby tooth kept by a mother to remind her of her child’s youth.
One such simple representation is the symbolism of the Butterfly. When we think of butterflies, we create in our minds the images of large colorful wings, flowers and nectar or unusual flight. But more often than not, we think of the transformation of the caterpillar through metamorphosis into the butterfly.
In non-technical terms we tend to view this process as “new life,” or “rebirth” or a “new beginning.” These are the primary symbolisms of the Butterfly.
Those symbolisms are what make giving a crystal butterfly figurine as a gift so unique and important. We all pass through various stages in our lives that can be celebrated as
a “rebirth” or “a new beginning.” You can celebrate one of these stages with a friend or a family member by giving a crystal butterfly as a gift.
When a family moves into a new home, they are in fact starting over. When someone is promoted to a higher level job new responsibilities come along with the position. When a young couple marries they begin a new life as one. Someone escaping death from an accident or illness has a new chance on life. These are just a few of the many stages that can be recognized with a crystal butterfly figurine. A few well-chosen words on the gift card will help to make the gift important and significant.
The question you might ask is “Why a Crystal Butterfly?” The answer is simple. A butterfly made from most other materials would not match the elegance, quality or beauty of crystal. Nor would it have the clarity and sparkle that we value so much. That sparkle captures the eye and will stimulate the memory and significance of the event for which it was given.
Crystal has its own level of symbolism. For hundreds of years, crystal has been the symbol of purity and social standing. It was the material favored by kings, nobility and artists. Perhaps combining crystal with a butterfly will take on its own meaning for our period in time.
The symbolism of a crystal butterfly gift will not go unnoticed. It will always be evident to the receiver and meaningful in that person’s life. The combined symbolism of crystal and butterfly can be very powerful.

Happy Baking Recipes
Author: Jill Seader
Finding happiness in baking can come from many things. The first whiff of chocolate from a freshly opened bag of chocolate chips. The joy on a child's face when they are able to crack the egg into the bowl by themselves. The absolutely delightful smell that fills every corner, nook and cranny of your home as your baking creation comes to life in the oven. The smile on the faces of friends and family when you bring that special dessert to the table. But sometimes the most simple joy can come simply from the fun and creative names of the treats that we bake. These two recipes brought a smile to my face simply because of their names. I hope that they do the same for you.
Happy Day Cake
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons cake flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
In a medium bowl, sift together the cake flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. Add in the shortening, milk and vanilla. With an electric mixer, beat the mixture for 2 minutes. Add in the egg and beat the mixture for an additional one minute. Grease and flour an 8-inch cake pan. Pour the mixture into the cake pan. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 25 minutes. Frost with your favorite frosting (chocolate in our house) or top with berries and whipped cream.
Cloud Nine Butterscotch Squares
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 package (3 3/4 ounce) butterscotch instant pudding mix
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup flour
1/2 cup milk
1 cup quick-cooking oatmeal
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
In a large bowl, beat the butter until it is creamy. Add in the pudding mix and mix well. Add in the eggs and vanilla extract. Alternately add in the milk and the flour. Mix well. Stir in the oatmeal and chocolate chips. Put the mixture into a 9 x 13-inch baking pan. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. Allow to cool and then frost with the following.
Chocolate Frosting
6 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons milk
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup chocolate chips
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, milk and sugar. Bring the mixture to a heavy boil. Allow the mixture to boil rapidly for 30 seconds. Take the mixture off the stove and add in the chocolate chips. Allow to cool a bit and then frost the bars.
Wishing you a happy, cloud nine kind of day!

Teen Summer Camp Offers Tips for Students
Author: Jim Hartley
Students who attend the academic summer camp, SuperCamp, acquire many valuable learning and life skills. Here are some Quantum Learning tips that can help every student do better in school. Share them with your son or daughter.
S.L.A.N.T.
Sit in the front row or middle section of the classroom. Lean slightly forward in your chair, as if you are hanging on the teacher's every word. Ask questions to clarify anything you don't understand. Nod your head to show you are listening and interested. Talk to your teacher after class to build rapport and establish a relationship.
Test-taking Strategies
Do test-time jitters ruin the time you spend studying and preparing? Allow yourself enough time to get to class a few minutes early- hurrying causes tension and mental crunches, and you can use the few extra minutes to review your notes one last time. Before and during the test, give yourself positive messages: "I know this information and I'm going to get an A." If you feel yourself getting tense, close your eyes for a moment and take a few deep breaths. Imagine a relaxing scene. If you're having trouble concentrating or are feeling overwhelmed, try drawing a mind map in the margin of your paper. It will help you remember what you studied.
Optimal Study Area
Design the optimum study area at home. It should include good lighting, a desk or table to work at, a comfortable chair, inspirational posters, and plants. Play Baroque music softly in the background. Study at the same time every day and take a short break every 30 minutes. Tackle the most difficult subjects first. When you get them out of the way, the rest will be easy.
Cultivate a Winning Attitude
Maintaining a positive attitude is your most important learning asset. You need to mentally prepare before any learning experience. Henry Ford said, "If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you can't. Either way, you are right."
Remember the "F" Stands for Feedback
From infancy through adulthood, we learn through our mistakes. Remember to learn from the feedback you get from others, whether it is a failed test or a poor relationship. In your path to become an excellent learner, feedback is simply the information you need to succeed. Refresh your memory and read about Failure Leads to Success and the rest of the 8 Keys of Excellence.
Plan Ahead
Use a calendar to mark days for tests or due dates of important papers. Studying ahead reduces stress and increases your ability to remember at test time.
Discover the Power of "This is it!"
"This is it!" means making the most of every moment. It also means doing whatever it takes to make a subject interesting. Be creative! Some ideas include studying with a friend or relating the topic to something you already know or like. When you know something well, you almost always find it interesting.
Overcome the Obstacle of a Blank Page with Freewriting
When faced with writer's block, freewriting provides visible and immediate progress. Choose a subject and set the timer for a specified amount of time. Write continuously until your time is up. Don't worry about structuring sentences, checking grammar, backtracking or crossing things out - just keep writing. Freewriting clears your mind, focuses your ideas and makes the invisible visible.
Take Breaks
Every thirty minutes it helps to take a short five-minute break. Take mini-breaks more often by standing up and stretching whenever you notice your mind wandering. Studies show that you remember best what you learned just before and just after a break - so the more breaks, the more you learn!

Tea, Tea or Tea?
Author: Linda Wilson
TEA IS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY CONSUMED BEVERAGES IN THE WORLD! Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of liquids is important to our overall health. Tea is a great beverage choice as it basically has no carbs, protein or fat. It is tasty, is a natural source of amino acid and antioxidant catechins. It is available in several forms and is tasty both as a hot drink or iced. Note that we are talking about true tea here. Herbal teas usually contain no actual tea leaves but infusions of fruit and/or herbs. Therefore, this article is not about herbal teas.
True tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis evergreen plant commonally known as the tea bush. The tea bush grows mainly in tropical and sub-tropical climates. This plant or tree prefers acidic soil and requires an annual rainfall of at least fifty inches. Camellia Sinensis plants can grow into trees but are usually kept cropped to about waist height to make cultivation easier. Only the leaves from the top 1-2 inches are picked. Many of the top-quality teas, such as darjeeling, are picked from plants grown at elevations of about 5,000 feet. This causes the plants to grow slower thus acquiring a better flavor.
There are four basic types of true tea common to us today. They are black, green, white and oolong. Each is unique but they all come from the same source. The difference occurs in the processing. Briefly, here is a description of each type and what makes it unique. Green tea leaves are unwilted and unoxidized. White tea leaves are wilted and unoxidized. Oolong tea leaves are wilted, bruised and partially oxidized. Black tea leaves are crushed and fully oxidized. Because of the oxidation process, white and green teas have a higher concentration of the antioxidant catechins.
Proper preparation also differs for each of the tea types. For black tea, boiling water should be used. Many of the active substances in black tea won't develop at lower temperatures. This is the most common mistake made when brewing black tea! For optimum results, black tea should be brewed about 4 minutes and never longer than 5 minutes. Longer brewing will cause the tea to taste bitter.
Green tea should be brewed at a lower temperature, approximately 180-185 degrees which is below the boiling point. Hotter water will burn the green tea leaves causing a bitter taste. When brewing green tea, it is best to pre-warm the mug or teapot you will brew in. This will keep the tea from cooling immediately before it is fully steeped.
Oolong tea should be brewed at about the boiling point in a pre-warmed mug or pot. For oolong tea, it is best to use spring water. The minerals in the water tend to bring out more of the flavor in the tea. High-quality oolong tea leaves can be brewed several times. It actually improves with reuse. Many believe the third brewing actually produces the best tea.
To keep your teas fresh and flavorful, store them in a dry, dark, cool place inside an airtight container.
The health properties of tea are constantly in debate. Many believe drinking tea will help to prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. One thing we know for sure is that tea contains both antioxidant and amino acid properties. It also doesn't add to our daily carb, protein or fat and calorie count when drank in it's natural state without adding sugar, milk, etc. And it tastes good. If you aren't currently a tea drinker, become one. It sure won't hurt you and it just might be healthy for you.

Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2
Author: Steve Proski
The addition of a Japanese garden to your front yard may enhance the salability of your home. An intriguing front yard of any type adds ambiance to a property. If a prospective buyer is drawn to your yard, perhaps he may be intrigued enough to view your home.
At this time of the year, the Japanese front yard stands out as one of the most eye-catching; it is because it does not need flowers to enhance it. Its charm is there regardless of plants; Japanese gardens follow Zen philosophies and are not difficult to reproduce in North America. They will lend themselves to any climate and any variation of plant.
Creating a Zen garden may even bring you some Zen contentment as a side effect! In "Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 1", the concept of assembling your own garden was discussed with particular attention to its ambiance, focal points, rocks and lanterns.
In this section - "Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2", the plants, water, bridges, vessels and aging aspect are all explored. Plants in the winter can be fairly non-existent but your Japanese garden will still look good, because it has an intriguing design that does not rely on blooms.
Snowdrops and a Japanese flowering cherry may be your first blooms in the spring. If these are unavailable to buy in your climate, use a local tree, shrub or cactus.
For a tall backdrop near a fence there is a flowering Japanese daisy that does well in cool climates. It is most commonly seen in white or pink. If you really love your blooms, then spread them around as you wish!
Pansies lend themselves well to the Japanese garden and also honeysuckle (plant it near your seating area to enjoy the scent). Lilies and gladiolus also blend in with the look, and if you have a pond, add water lilies.
One of the plants that somehow looks Japanese is the begonia; they come in miniature or regular, and their colors are vivid. If you live in an area where not many flowers will bloom, try sticking to one color; consider buying every flower in white to keep to the simple idea.
If you buy evergreens, remember that you can choose from yellow, gray-green and blue-green as well as the traditional green. The red-leafed bush is also a colorful addition, and good 'filler'. If you live in the desert, choose from the exotic collection of unique plants available to you there. Play more with the rock and ornamental pathway idea of laying out your garden.
Many people have put in their own pond; pond liners are inexpensive and instructions for the novice are easy to find on the Internet or in books.
A pond does not need a pump and can be small or large. However, some people prefer the use of a pump to allow the water to cascade over carefully placed rocks, etc.
A pond is a small area of Zen 'nothingness' where nothing else resides; water is also seen as the symbol for cleansing and purification. The sound of running water is said to soothe the soul, and have a de-stressing effect on the mind. However, if taking on a pond that complex is rather daunting (and stressful!) - there are other options.
Some of the self contained portable fountains where the water circulates within its own container can be found in bamboo styles. This would satisfy the need for the sound of running water; you may have to use an extension lead to operate it.
A truly Japanese focal point, and one that the Zen design ideally calls for, is a small bridge. This is to take you from one world to another; specifically from the troubled world in which we live into the soothing world of your Zen garden. Bridges can be ordered from the Internet, but you have to put them together yourself. Or maybe a local carpenter will create one for you?
If you buy a long shaped pond liner, you can place your bridge at one end of it and just plant tall bamboos or reeds on the far side of the bridge. This will suggest that your pond is bigger than it is and that the water runs under the bridge and past it.
To protect children and to keep your garden safe, install a stainless steel grid a few inches under the water level to 'catch' falling children.
Empty vessels and containers in stone, wood or terra cotta or another natural medium are appropriate in the Zen garden. The idea started with cracked teapots from Japanese tea ceremonies that the monks thought were too pretty to throw away. It has escalated into pots and empty vessels, and in some ways, the idea that the pot is old and was once useful ties in with the Japanese need for the reverence of age.
Venerability is highly regarded and in Zen gardens this need for maturity or dignity is represented by old, gnarled tree trunks, the patina on old stone, weathered wood or silvery gray driftwood. Old stone with moss nearby and growing over the top of the stone is a well known feature.
Maybe you can find your own moss by going for a country walk and lifting moss by sliding a knife underneath it. Keep it damp on the way home and try to cultivate it in your own garden. With one or more of these representations of aging, your garden is allowing the element of time to be revered.
Once you have created the true Zen garden, it will have 'shibui': there is no real translation, but a restrained and simple elegance comes close to describing it. It should also help you to resonate with stillness as it will emanate 'seijaku' - peace and calm.

Ever walked past someone's garden and been so enraptured by the front yard that you hardly registered what the house looked like? In these days of the difficult-to-shift property market, that is the kind of garden you want.
Front yards that have appeal may draw a buyer into your home. If they like the way you have finished your yard - they may think that they will like the way you have finished your home.
At this time of the year a yard is more about evergreens and accessories than flowers, as there are very few blooms available. Also - and for this reason - it is at this time of year that the Japanese garden stands out. A Japanese garden can lend itself to almost any climate, from snowy to humid, from rainy to desert.
To get an idea of the look of a Japanese garden, first look in a few magazines or books at the library, or check out some illustrations on the Internet. Pick illustrations that look similar to the same size and shape as the layout of your garden. Depending on your preference you may wish to copy some layout plans or ideas.
Japanese gardens are traditionally ruled by Zen philosophy. Each feature has a deeper representation which you can ponder on, once you are aware of them. As you walk through your Japanese Zen area each day, you may even absorb some of the peace embedded in the Zen philosophy. These ideas for your own Japanese front yard will be discussed in two parts.
Firstly, in "Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 1", the focus is on ambience, focal points, rocks and lanterns; then a follow up in "Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2" explores plants, water, bridges, vessels and aged items. These combined features help to form the Japanese Zen garden.
There are several factors of this look that can be touched on to create an unusual garden. In an abstract way, the qualities that the gardens are representing are peace and tranquility, and in Zen philosophy, this is created by simplicity.
The relaxing ambience that encourages meditation can be achieved by placing a bamboo or rattan chair plus a small table near a wall, or in front of a lattice fence. If your garden is in a hot part of the country, group the seats under a tree or parasol. Stillness is the key word here.
Two other abstract notions suggested in a Zen garden are represented physically by a focal point that is not placed centrally, and secondly, a 'window' to a hidden part in your garden.
This can be represented by a piece of tall, latticed fence work, or a tree with shrubs around, or a pagoda, or even simply a bench that is partly concealed. This 'hide and reveal' theme is suggestive of the quest for human enlightenment and it also offers privacy. You may wish to incorporate your seating here for that reason.
The introduction of something tall lends itself to the look of the Japanese garden. Western gardens tend to be larger and boast a flat expanse of lawn; Japanese homes usually have tiny gardens. They tend to be more vertical, and tall shrubs will often be placed to hide the house from the street.
For an inexpensive focal point, you can dig a bed and put a bamboo or a red Japanese maple (miniature or full size) plus other plants in it. The bamboo bushes and trees will live in most mild North American areas, though you may have to 'cover it' in severe frosts. A very large cactus or groupings of cacti will also make an interesting focal point.
Smaller beds can be dug in across the yard. The center of the yard is deliberately left empty, and a lack of symmetry is desired. This reflects the lack of perfection in the world!
For some authentic Japanese atmosphere, one tall and one shorter black lantern can be well placed along your winding (never straight!) pathway, or sometimes peeking out from amongst a selection of shrubs and plants.
A small pathway can lead to nowhere, and Zen gardens will always have at least one pathway of either white round gravel or gray flattened gravel wending its way through your shrubs; several glimpses of this pathway will satisfy the unity and harmony requirement of Zen gardens.
Whilst lanterns are more of a Buddhist tradition, they have come to represent the essence of the Japanese garden, so they are also included in Zen designs.
One very large Japanese lantern and one smaller one elsewhere can look effective. These usually come in two traditional styles, one more fat-bellied and squat than the other. They are most commonly found in black or pale gray.
Some of the most inexpensive modern lighting will lend itself to the Japanese mode. The 'push-in' mushroom type lamps are very easily assimilated into the Zen garden design.
Rocks and stone are a big feature of the Japanese garden, with different sized rocks grouped seemingly at random. Smaller rocks will look good grouped with your focal point, or added to a bush or plant grouping.
Try to find at least one big rock. If you have one big one, you can group smaller ones beside it and finish off with a fern or two. Stones represent life's immovable mountains.
If that really resonates with you, beware; just one rock will suffice; you do not need a rock for each immovable mountain in your life! If you feel that you have numerous immovable mountains in your life, then move into "Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2" where the de-stressing values of water-sounds are discussed!

Getting The Most From Your Garden - Large Or Small
Author: Kenneth Scott
Whether you are buying a new home or improving an old one, your outdoor environment represents one of the greatest values associated with the house. New methods of gardening can make the task of beautifying your surroundings much easier than in the past. By improving the grounds of your house, you will be able to take advantage of the new ways of living that having a liveable outdoor space brings. Lawn furnishings and barbeques are just the beginning of backyard luxury.
In architectural terms, the house of today represents a greater part of the outdoors than a house in the past. Most houses have large picture windows, glass walls or glassed-in rooms, and terraces that make the garden an integral part of the house. Therefore, the view from the house becomes more important than ever before. A beautiful lawn and garden with healthy trees add much to the interior space of your house.
When planning to improve your grounds you must consider several principles of design: proportion, color, texture, line, harmony, and function. These same principles apply to both interior and exterior decorating. If you are blessed with large grounds, you will benefit from extra careful planning. There are many garden books available to help you select just the type of garden and grounds you want. You need to choose one that will fit in with your physical location and the needs of your family, however. It is best to design the grounds by factoring in the familys needs and habits.
Unless you have a lot of room, you are unlikely to put everything you want into your garden plan, but you can make improvements on a gradual basis. You can plan a garden so that something is always in bloom or leafing out, while saving space for future additions. Some landscaping projects will have more than one purpose as well. A driveway, for example, can provide a place to ride a bicycle and park the card. A retaining wall can serve as a rock garden when it is planted with dwarf shrubbery.
In general, grounds are divided into a public area, a service area, and a private area. The public area can be seen from the street and its landscaping should be planned to require minimal care. The service area is where the parking, laundry, and storage facilities are located and should be planned for efficiency. The private area is where you will do your living, dining, and playing. The largest part of your grounds should be reserved for the private area, and this where you will put your flowers and take advantage of existing trees and shade.
Making changes to a landscape can be never-ending, but it is an activity that can be both beautifying and gratifying. It makes a home more luxurious and gives pleasure to all who see it.

Gardens Are a Magical Part of Family Life!
Author: India Cooper
Gardens are a magical part of family life. Some outdoor space, however limited, is a real bonus when you have children. A space to run around in, play with a ball and learn to dig, water and nurture plants is really beneficial to kids growing up.
A good gardener can give you all sorts of ideas for your patch, whether you have a balcony or an acre or two. Just like interior planning, if you have the space you may want to define an area for adults and a separate area for children, as your needs are poles apart. Adults enjoy gardens for relaxation and peace, whereas children use them as areas for free play, for secret dens and for letting off steam.
So what do you need for the perfect children's garden?
Lawns are a great all-purpose garden surface that kids can kick balls across and adults can sunbathe on. Of course they require maintenance - from regular mowing in the Spring and Summer to annual feeding and weeding to keep in tip top condition. Kids running a lot on a lawn can cause bare patches in hot weather and in wet weather mud may become an issue. But there are hard-wearing types of grass on the market. In particular fine-leafed rye grass stands up to heavy use.
When planting up a family garden go for robust plants that will withstand the odd flying football and trampling feet. Delicate plants should be tucked away in borders away from the play area, or in pots. Also beware of poisonous plants that little children may touch. They may even try to chew the flowers and berries. And sharp or thorn plants can cause accidents so keep these to a minimum for an easier life.
Children love discovering how plants grow and adore picking fruit and vegetables that they have cultivated themselves. Spring bulbs, planted in the autumn are very rewarding and fruit and vegetables that are easy to grow include runner beans, tomatoes, lettuces and blueberries. Herbs are also fairly foolproof.
If you have space small children love climbing equipment, swings and hammocks to play in. There are plenty of ready made apparatus available or some gardeners and carpenters will custom make stepping stones, tight ropes, even tree houses! Just make sure that whatever play equipment you use is properly anchored to the ground and that there is a safe landing underneath - grass or bark chippings both work really well.
Other ideas include a sandpit - either built-in or temporary. It should be covered when not being used to keep out rain and animals. Also, get sandpit sand not ordinary sand as it will be much finer and more suitable. A water play table or a paddling pool is also popular but young children will need supervision.
Another major attraction in a family garden is a pond. Children will enjoy the wildlife - insects, plants, fish even frogs. This is best left until children are steady on their feet and have an understanding of water danger. Even a shallow pond can present a risk to a young child.
A child's ideal garden would probably have a secret den - a shady corner, some overgrown shrubbery or some space behind a tree. Its fun for children to discover these places themselves and claim ownership. But if that's not possible you can buy in alternatives such as a tepee, a tent, or a Wendy house.
An important part of family life is of course eating together and what could be more enjoyable than a bit of al fresco dining? The transitional area between the house and garden is ideal for this - a hard surface like paving or decking provides a good base for tables and chairs and will make mealtimes a real event. Even a picnic on the balcony or lawn is a fun way to enjoy food together - maybe some of it grown and picked by the kids!
Kids love spending time outdoors and whether you have room for two people to sit or vast areas to play in its easy to make the most of the space. Even just hanging a birdfeeder and planting up a couple of pots will bring the outdoors to life for a child.

Spring Time Tips for Gardeners
Author: Ariel
Spring is here, pretty much at your doorstep, and you want to make sure that you get it right when it comes to your garden. That’s why this little brief gives you some basics on maintaining and preparing your garden, at such a crucial time. How your garden turns out will depend largely on taking the right course of action. In the garden, the season is known as one of birth and rebirth begins with the necessary preparation of the soil.
3 words – Soil, soil, and soil!
Without healthy soil, it is unlikely that you will be able to get the best out of the seeds that you plant. There is the inevitable digging which needs to be done in order to loosen the soil so that the roots of the plants you plant can penetrate further. Organic matter for soil is increasingly becoming the “talk of the town” as a way to improve soil quality, and after all, a healthy lawn is dependent on healthy soil. So make sure to mix in some of the magical nutrients into the soil when digging and turning.
Pick ‘n’ Mix
The next step is to choose the plants that you want to grow. Obviously, this choice is personal, and depends entirely on the look and feel you want in your garden. The key to this part of the process is to make sure that that the plants you pick appeal to you and that they will be suitable for the environment and conditions in which you will plant them.
Time to Sew
Once you have chosen the plants that you want, the real fun part comes. Planting should be done on a mild day, so that the conditions aren’t too harsh for your budding plants. You should dig a relatively deep and wide hole and place the plant in its new location. You should make sure that the top of the root is level with the surrounding soil before refilling the hole, half with soil before filling the rest with water. The water should seep into the soil at which point you should fill the rest of the hole with the leftover soil. Then, garnish with a little more water and voila!
Almost there…
You all know that the process doesn’t end there. Your little plants will need dedicated care and attention in order to grow properly. Regular watering, generally in the early morning is best. If you use a hose, make sure that you don’t drown the plants in too much water. Instead, make sure that the water seeps in slowly. Add a couple of inches of mulch for a double whammy of helping to stop weeds from growing and helping the soil retain water. Over the next few weeks, keep watering and you can even add some fertilizer (around mid-season) to give your plants a boost. By following these tips you should soon be reaping the rewards of a beautiful garden.

Planning To Build Greenhouse Garden
Author: Bercle George
A greenhouse is a structure with a glass or plastic roof and frequently glass or plastic walls; it heats up because incoming solar radiation from the sun warms plants, soil, and other things inside the building. The first modern greenhouses were built in Italy in the thirteenth century[4] to house the exotic plants that explorers brought back from the tropics. A modern glasshouse in RHS WisleyThe idea of growing plants in environmentally controlled areas has existed since Roman times.
When a greenhouse is said to be freestanding, this means that it can stand alone. Greenhouse kits are generally easy to put together as the parts are already pre-drilled and pre-cut. Greenhouses thus work by trapping electromagnetic radiation and preventing convection. This greenhouse design can be attached to another greenhouse or can be beautifully constructed in a garden freestanding.

Some equipments for greenhouse;
Preparations need to be done to install and heater and a ventilation system which could to counter the threat and make the flowers grow in the greenhouse. These power vented heaters have a blower that pushes air through the pipe and outside the structure. The most common way of supplying phosphorus is through phosphoric acid or super phosphate. Electric heaters can efficiently maintain specified temperature levels.
Tips for management of a greenhouse garden:
1. You greenhouse design should have enough room for tall plants and plants should only use half up to two-thirds of your greenhouse area and the rest is reserved for benches and your work area.

The size of greenhouses also varies depending on the purpose of the structure. The first is draw the design then go to a supplier who can do that or go directly to the contractor to make a drawing then have it made. Assembly can be done in under an hour plus no tools are required to put together a portable greenhouse.
Fertilizer:
One of the most important factors in maintaining crops inside a greenhouse is fertilization. Calcium Nitrate in Greenhouse Grade may be used in large scale growing. The frequency of the application of fertilizers can influence the growth of the plants as well. Any pre-mixed or ready mixture of fertilizer for the kind of plants that you grow is acceptable; for most flowering and foliar plants. Plants need calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum and chloride.
Portable Greenhouse:
Portable greenhouses, just like the traditional ones, trap heat coming from the sun during the day through its covering and keep the heat radiated by the soil during the night to keep the surroundings warm enough for the plants. A portable greenhouse is ideal for early planting of seeds, protecting the tender plants from the cold climate, starting perennial seeds in summer, fast rooting because of the need to transplant, and growing different kinds of plants that are not commonly grown in the area. Scientists have discovered that it is only when this is diffused into the water system that the roots of the crops consume it making it grow.

Members of the Family

Members of the family
When we are head of the family, it is our duty to see that we are able to maintain the family. And when we talk of maintenance of family, we must ensure that each member is getting what he or she wants in life. Most of us are satisfied when we provide provisions for the kitchen and for the house and the members who are in the house are ignored. very few of us talk to our people in the house and try to understand what they desire, what are their wishes and aspirations in life. Even we ignore their wishes when we are selecting a profession, trade, calling and employment for them and at times we ignore the aptitude of the child.
It is our duty to provide proper education, proper training to the child, but while choosing his profession, trade, calling and employment for them, we should have a thorough study of their interest and aptitude and if need be we should consult some expert in the line. We should not be in a hurry and we must be alive when our child is reaching the eighth class because here he or she shall need selection of subjects and therefore, he or she must be having the subjects which shall be the base for his further study and choice of training course.
Here in India the people are poor and that is the reason they are not in a position to take care of their children. They are at school and they just 3 Rs and nothing more and then they are before the Employment Exchanges. When they are asked to explain the job for which they are applying, they are not in a position tell in what trade or calling their names be registered. This is the tragedy and therefore, the father who is the head of the family must be alive and he must take care of his children. If the father had been suffering in his life, he should not see that his children should also suffer the same fate. The father must try to change the course of life from here and must see that what he himself could not attain in life, his children must attain those targets and therefore, he must put all his labour and energy to put the track right.
People in India had been suffering for generations only because their parents had been taking revenge from them. they had been suffering because of the faults and follies of their parents and they had been taking revenge from their children and therefore, we had been increasing the number of illiterate people, untrained people, poor people, unemployed people, people who are living in mud houses, people who are not wearing clothes but rags, people who are begging and are on the road as drug addicts, opium eaters and drunkards. The present generation must try to take care of the family and they must see that this is the most appropriate time when they should start on the right path without any further delay.
To day we are passing through the age of science and technology and therefore, we must see that our children go ahead and should not suffer like us. We must work and if need be, we should take help from the state and other financial institutions and must see that from this stage, we shall be on the right path. We had been noting that the state itself could not change the style of life and we are still from where we started in 1947. Most of the people are still illiterate, untrained, unemployed, poor, living in mud houses, living in huts, are wearing rags, are beggars are not having suitable living accommodations, are not in a position to have proper treatment when then are ill and therefore, there seems no chance of improvement in their life style. The head of the families shall have to concentrate on the members of their families and they should not depend upon the state or others. They have already wasted six decades and therefore, this ignorance should be stopped and we must have an eye on the improvement of each member in the family and this must start without any further delay.

Cell Phone Records
Author: Ed Opperman
Until very recently if you suspected your spouse or lover was cheating one way to spy on them would be to go online or hire a private investigator and purchase copies of their cell phone bills. That way you could get a complete listing of all the incoming and out going calls from their cell phone. It was a great tool for investigators and a very useful resource for victims of infidelity to make an informed decision about their relationships. No one likes to be in the dark about infidelity.
Like all things that can be used for good it was open to abuse. For instance the blogsters at AMERICAblog was able to obtain General Wesley Clark's cell phone records for $89.95. Now unless you are Mrs Wesley Clark this is an obvious abuse of an investigative tool. Terrorists could have purchased those cell phone records and used the information illegally and put the General , his family and even the nation at risk.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat proposed legislation H.R. 4709: Law Enforcement and Phone Privacy Protection Act of 2006, and S. 2178: Consumer Telephone Records Protection Act of 2006, both passed committee. so it is no longer possible to legally purchase such information. It is illegal to obtain these records unless you are the actual owner of the phone and you can prove it.
Well this should protect us from identity thieves and terrorists but what about the run of the mill soccer mom that suspects her man is out doing her wrong? What can she do? Well there are still some ways to obtain info from cell phones that are perfectly legal. One is a Digital Forensics. If you are the legal owner of the phone you can hire investigators and have the phone examined forensically. Most people don't realize it but deleted text messages, deleted Caller ID records and deleted address book entries can all be retrieved from a cell phones or Blackberry and many other hand held electronic devices. Or you can give your spouse a gift of a phone with GPS installed and track their every move. It's also possible and perfectly legal to do an online search of thousands of personal ads to see if your lover's email address is being used for online cheating.
So like all things Internet the technology moves faster than lawmakers. As long as investigators are responsible and are not making these tools available to potential terrorists and limiting them to legitimate investigations we can be safe from terrorist, Identity Theft and Infidelity all at the same time.

Time Flies
Author: Margaret Mauldin
Have you ever heard the cliche “Time Flies“? Do you think time flies? If time flies where does it go?
Time is defined in many ways depending on how you use it in a sentence. In this instance, time can be described as ones lifetime. Time is a non spatial continuum, in which events occur in apparent irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future. As the clock ticks off minutes, hours and days, we may not have finished what we are doing or what we want to do, but the clock keeps ticking leaving us with less time.
As a child, time seemed like it stopped, it didn't go fast enough. As time passes, it picks up the pace and we hear "the older I get the faster time goes", or "time really flies". We look back on our memories and wonder where time went.
Remembering the "good old days", my grandparents lived a block from my parents house and growing up, I spent a lot of time there. After my Grandfather retired, both of them stitched hand made quilts using the old quilting frames, giving them to children and grandchildren. Grandma used to say “we do it to pass the time”. They also spent many hours in the front porch swing, talking about what their lives were like raising their family in times gone by. My Grandfather owned a gasoline jobber business and the boys in the family helped out there, while the girls helped in the house and with the growing of vegetables and fruits to feed their family. We heard stories about not having a road in front of their house when they built it and then a mud and gravel road before paving; there was no or little money and things were bartered or traded. As they grew older, when we were ending our visit, we would say “we will see you next time” and Grandma would respond with “Well, I hope so.” She knew their time was growing near. My grandparents have both been gone several years, but I will always cherish the memories and the time I spent with my grandparents.
Now, I am telling stories of the “good old days” to my grandchildren about the years of my growing up, and raising a family. I often wonder how the past 70 years have gone so fast and I often comment maybe time really does fly. In a span of 70 years there are 25,550 days, 613,000 hours, 36,792,000 minutes and 2,207,520,000 seconds. Did I use this time wisely? We can’t go back and get that time. Did I accomplish everything that was meant for me to do? How will I pass the time for the rest of my years? Will my grandchildren cherish the time I spent with them? I certainly hope so.
In a time for taking stock of ones life, time can be defined as a suitable or opportune moment or season. I have had many moments of opportune moments or seasons, as I look back in time every day, re-living those memories of past times. In taking stock of our life, can we really determine if time flies? Where did it go?

Roof Repair Tips
Author: Benjamin DeBell
Homeowners worry about their roofs. After all, roof repair work can be costly, and a damaged roof can cause any number of problems, from leaks to structural damage. A good roof does more than place a barrier between you and the elements – it also keeps your home cozy and beautiful and ensures a pleasant life in your home. Professional contractors suggest that you maintain your roof with the following roof repair tips:
1) It’s a lot easier to fix a roof when the damage is minor, but many homeowners do not look up and notice any potential problems. Once in a while, look up and use binoculars to note any torn or missing shingles or any gaps in your roofing material. If you have lived in your home for some time and do not know how old your roof is or when work was last done on it, call a trusted professional for an inspection. There may be damage that is not yet visible that needs to be addressed. Many roofs will last for two decades or more, and if your roof is older than that, it could start leaking with no warning whatsoever, even if it looks fine.
2) Get trees pruned back so that they do not lash your roof. Trees near your roof can rip tiles and allow squirrels to scamper over your tiles, damaging them.
3) Avoid walking on your roof. Your weight on your roof can damage the tiles and even the roof structure. Climbing a ladder to do your own roof repair can do more harm than good, so it is a good idea to leave the roof work to professionals. It’s safer, as well – falling from your roof can be fatal.
4) If you wish to do your own roof repair and know how to do so, make sure that you play it safe. Take your time and always work with someone who can hold the ladder for you and call for help if you get stuck. Wear sturdy, non-slip, rubber-soled shoes and use a sturdy ladder. In general, you will only want to complete very simple repairs yourself. If you have holes in your roof causing leaks, for example, you may temporarily seal the holes with plastic sheeting or tar paper. You can also fix very small holes with a trowel and some roofing plastic cement. Larger, permanent roofing jobs should be handled by professionals who can ensure the job is done correctly.

Choosing a Roofing Contractor
Author: Benjamin DeBell
Roofing work is expensive and important to your home’s value and your own comfort. Choosing the right contractor can mean an attractive roof, a comfortable home, and even a better home value. The wrong professional can leave you with a huge bill, incomplete work, and even leaks or falling roofing. When choosing a roofing contractor, it is important that you:
1) Double-check that a roofing professional has a tax identification number, permanent place of business, telephone number, and occupational license. If someone claiming to be a contractor does not have these things readily available, he or she may not be qualified to fix your roof and may be ready to move soon – not something you are looking for in a professional.
2) Check a contractor’s reputation. Your contractor should be able to put you in touch with previous clients happy with their work and should be able to show you completed projects. Call past clients and the Better Business Bureau in your area to make sure that the contractor completes roofing work as promised.
3) Ask to see the contractor’s proof of insurance (both liability coverage and workers’ compensation certification). Also, ask to see evidence that the contractor is licensed and bonded. If your contractor does not have these items, you could face a legal headache if anything goes wrong. Any roofing professional should be able to provide this information easily.
4) Ask to see the manufacturer’s warranty. Most roofing work includes some form of material – such as tiles, for example. These items come with warranties. Check the warranties and find out what is and is not covered by them. Also, ask the contractor whether they provide any warranties for labor.
5) Work out a written proposal and contract. Look over these documents carefully and even have an attorney glance at them, if you wish. You want to ensure that the roofing work will be completed in a reasonable manner.
6) Speak with the contractor before he or she does any actual work on your home. A good contractor will be able to answer your questions knowledgably and will be willing to listen to your questions and concerns. Be wary of the contractor eager to sell you the latest roofing technology but unwilling to answer your questions. Avoid working with contractors who do not listen to your needs and with contractors who try to pressure you into buying services or products you do not need.

Modern Roofing Styles
Author: Benjamin DeBell
Part of your roof’s style was determined by the architect or builder. Whether you have a gable roof , cross gabled roof, simple hip roof, pyramid hip roof, cross hipped roof, mansard roof, saltbox roof, gambrel roof, flat roof, or shed roof, there is not a great deal you can do about the shape of your roof. If you are interested in a major renovation, you can hire a contractor to change your basic roof style, but this can be very expensive. An easier way to make over your roofing is to change the material your roof is made from. Whether you switch from a copper roof to a cedar shingle or from a wood roof to metal, there are many modern roofing styles you can adopt:
1) Asphalt shingles. These are popular for their low cost and wide range of styles. You can buy asphalt shingles with tabs, color shading, scalloped edges, and many more features that can give you the style you want. Most asphalt roofs will last between 15 and 30 years.
2) Cedar roofing. Cedar shakes and shingles look wonderful and are a natural roofing material. When well-maintained, this sort of roof can last up to 25 years.
3) Laminated asphalt shingles. These shingles are made from layers of organic, fiberglass, or mixed felt. The layers provide a three-dimensional textured look that can imitate slate, cedar, or other higher-cost materials.
4) Metal roofing. Light-weight aluminum, steel, or alloy roofing is long-lasting -- it can last 50 years or more – and is easy to install. In fact, most metal roofs can be installed over top of existing roofing materials. Modern metal roofs are popular because they offer so many style choices. You can choose from metal panels, shingles or tiles for your roof in a rainbow of colors. If you have an older home, you can opt for granular-coated tiles that imitate shakes or an old-fashioned tile.
5) Slate. Slate is actually an older style of roofing, but many homeowners still have slate roofs, thanks to the fact that this roof can last more than a century. This form of roofing is one of the most expensive to install.
6) Copper Roofing. This style of roofing is very popular in New England. Copper roofs cost more to install than many other roofing styles, but they will last for a very long and improve the resale value of your home.

Add Concrete Pizzazz to Your Home or Business
Author: Cameron B. Martel
Up until recently, concrete driveways, patios, and sidewalks were almost an afterthought. Sure, they needed to be included as part of the design of a home or other structure, but they were never really included as a design element.
Things have changed, though, and now your concrete structures can be as beautiful and intriguing as the rest of your design. Specially trained contractors can now custom dye concrete prior to pouring it, allowing you to add color that goes anywhere from subtle to absolutely brilliant.
Concrete, as a matter of fact, is no longer just for driveways. The ability to stamp concrete to mimic other materials such as rock, stone, or even wood, makes it a cost effective and durable alternative for gardens, retaining walls, decks, patios, and even for use indoors for floors and countertops.
An Affordable Way to Customize Your Home
For both modern and traditional homes, designers are catching onto the new concrete craze, using it in a variety of hues, in places where concrete never dared to go before. Throughout modern kitchens, colored concrete countertops are catching on as an ultra-modern and unique design element. Other examples of colored concrete include beautiful garden walls and gorgeous pool surroundings, which can give your home a new and exotic look.
Unlike natural building products such as stone, brick, or tile that need to be cut and fitted, which can be time consuming and tedious, colored concrete is easy to form around any area and can be added to any yard quickly and easily.
Draw Attention to Your Business
Private businesses and government entities are taking advantage of the many benefits of colored concrete. For example, if you are in Canada, just look around and you will find Ontario colored concrete in parks, shopping malls, city buildings, and fire stations.
Add a new sign to draw attention to your business mounted atop a colored concrete wall, or use colored concrete to jazz up your sidewalks and driveway. Or install a colored concrete floor inside your business for a surface that is extremely durable and requires little maintenance. With the addition of concrete stamping, you can have a beautiful floor that looks like costly slate or stone, but will not wear and is more cost effective to install.
The next time you decide to update the look of your home or business, consider adding colored concrete to your décor. It will tie in beautifully with nearly any style or design, and could be the one element that pulls the entire look together for you. Making the decision to use colored concrete will not only enhance the value of your home, but it is a wise investment of your money as well. Concrete is extremely durable and does not require extensive maintenance. Nor does it need to be replaced after only a few years of use. The decision to include colored concrete in your home, yard, landscaping, or business, is one that you can enjoy and be thankful for every day as you admire the sophistication it adds.

Here are a Few Tips on How to Buy a Roasting Pan
Author: Muna wa Wanjiru
Lots of your cooking problems can be solved if you know how to buy the right roasting pan. People usually get all fussy about such cookware items around the holidays when they have to cook something special for the family. There are a few tips and pieces of information to consider when you want to replace your old roasting pan or simply enrich your kitchen with a new item. The most showy roasting pan models are stainless steels ones with porcelain enamel, with the mention that some of these roasters also have serving trays. The quality of the design and the price vary from one manufacturer to the other, but you should definitely try to find the best product in the range.
A roasting pan is generally used for meat cooking, but you can also prepare large desserts and special cakes in them. The only thing you should be careful about is the fact that meat leaves a lot of juice and therefore you'll need a roasting pan at least three inches deep so that the drippings can accumulate safely. The overall size varies from case to case, and you are the one to decide how large a roasting pan you need. Some of the more advanced models include special lids or covers for the roasting pan so that the flavor is trapped inside.
There are pros and cons to the non-stick roasting pan too; unlike regular traditional pans, such items don't allow the food to stick and scorch due to the special coating that covers the cooking surface. Yet, the disadvantage of a non-stick roasting pan lies in the fact that it is a lot more difficult to clean and use; no metal spatula can be taken advantage of because of such coatings and the cleaning requires the use of a special plastic sponge, preferably made of nylon.
The additional features of a roasting pan are equally important when judging the balance between quality and price. Time settings are important if you have a special preference for a certain type of cooking: should it be slow or quick roasting? Then, would you like a roasting pan with handles? If you want to buy such an item make sure to check the way the handles are attached to the pan. Last but not least, you should also be satisfied with the weight of the roasting pan, the ease of handling and the cleaning instructions offered by the manufacturers.

What are Pros and Cons of Using a Steel Pan?
Author: Muna wa Wanjiru
A steel pan may seem like a great comfort in the kitchen and from a certain point of view it really is. When compared to the cast iron models, a steel pan may look like a princess; yet, there are pros and cons to its use, which won't get it a maximum rating. A stainless steel pan will always be safe from rusting or chemical reactions with food, and this type of cookware will do for the making of a diversity of dishes. Yet, there are certain inconveniences that cannot be overlooked when it comes to the use of a steel pan. First of all, it is more expensive than regular aluminum cookware for instance, however, it is far from being the most costly of all.
A steel pan will not always heat evenly, since this type of metal doesn't have the best conductive properties of all. It may not react when in contact with alkaline or acid food, but a steel pan won't make the best of choices when baking something that requires extreme care and high temperature control. In order to combine the non-corrosive features and the great looks of a steel pan with the heat conductivity of other metals, manufacturers have come to a solution of compromise.
Thus, the inner structure of a regular steel pan may include a core made from a different metal, usually copper or aluminum, which has great heat conductive properties. Such a combination of materials makes the steel pan a lot more reliable since the heat is evenly distributed on the entire contact surface. The most advanced models have the adjacent metal core extended to the sides of the steel pan, with the mention that the copper or aluminum core needs to be thick enough to ensure a correct heat dispersion. Very often the first indicator that you are about to purchase a high quality steel pan is the price.
When it comes to washing a steel pan, one needs to be careful to maintain the luster and the shine by avoiding scratching and water spotting. If food sticks to the steel pan, do not scratch it with some metal tool; first leave it full of hot water for at least fifteen minutes, then gently use a scouring pad or a scraper made of nylon. If you choose the dishwasher variant of cleaning, do not allow a steel pan to dry inside, since the high temperatures in the drying program would lead to the formation of water spots. It is better to remove the steel pot from the dishwasher and wipe it with a soft towel.

How to Choose a Dining Table Set
Author: P G
A new and gentle use of all homeowners' desire a warm and welcoming dining room where they can entertain at holidays and celebrate special occasions. There are as many dining tables on the market as there are decorating tastes.
Design: Although it can be unfair to pair traditional chairs with a contemporary table, and vice versa, try to find pieces that share a common design element. If the table has a sinuous cabriole leg, look for a chair with the same line in the leg or back, or choose upholstery with swirls on it. If the table is square or rectangular, look for chairs with a square or rectangular seat but a dining table set with curvy edges and quadrilateral corners include additional sophistication to the style. A round table that's big enough to seat 10 probably won't fit in your dining room, and opposing guests will be so far away it will defeat the whole purpose of buying a round table.
Size: The dining table should be scaled appropriately for the room: a small dining room looks best with a small table, a big dining room demands a big table. To allow adequate space for seating and circulation, make sure there's at least 48 inches between each edge of the table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. If traffic doesn't pass behind the chairs on one side of the table, 36 inches should be sufficient on that side because the `Entryway` is more congested then any other part of the house. Ideally, the dining table should measure 36-42 inches across. Narrower than that leaves no place in the middle for food; wider than that makes conversation difficult with the person seated opposite you.
Capacity: Although the table should be scaled to the room, it should be scaled to your needs as well. How many visitors/Guests can you house on a single coffee table? If you host frequent large dinners, you'll need a large table. If you plan on using the dining table primarily for family meals or small gatherings, a smaller table will work better. (There's nothing inviting about four people dispersed around a 12-foot table.) If you only entertain large groups on an occasional basis, consider buying a smaller table that can expand to a certain decent size. To figure out how many people you'll be able to seat around a given table, allot 24 inches in width for each diner.
Style: Let architecture of the house decor and the other elements in the room dictate the style of dining table you choose. If the atmosphere is traditional, a traditional table will usually look best; if it's contemporary, go with a contemporary table. If you're buying a wooden table, select a wood that appears in the architecture or in another piece of furniture in the room, so the table will feel like a cohesive element in the home's decor. If you're going with a painted piece, repeat the color in the walls or other items in the room.
Finishing: `Walnut and mahogany` always provide traditional `Wood` look to a piece of dining furniture! Finishing of a `Cherry; oak and pine, tend to look more casual to the visitors. A new technology of `Furniture Artistry` includes a term called `Extensia` which means that the length of the `Dining table` can be extended to a desired level of easy accessibility. (These featured overlapping panels can be extended to nearly double the table's length.) How concerned are you about staining and scratching? A wood tabletop is more susceptible to damage than glass, but can be refinished if needed. Traditional wood tables are a bit more forgiving, because they tend to feature carvings or figured veneers that help hide irregularities in the surface, while contemporary wood tables have little to distract you from errant scratches or water rings. Glass-topped tables are less susceptible to spills and staining, but show fingerprints more readily, so they require some diligence to maintain. Many hosts don't like glass tabletops because you can see your guests' laps and feet, but table settings will usually obscure the view and converting a `Transparent` view to `Translucent` view.
Modern/Antique: Adjustability: Antique dining tables can add a sense of age and character to a room, but offer their own shopping challenges. If the table has leaves, be sure you take them out and try them before you buy, to make sure they fit correctly and match the finish of the rest of the table. If you're buying an old farmhouse table or similarly rustic piece, check the height to make sure it's suitable for dining (29-30 inches is standard), and try sitting at the table with the dining chairs you plan to use. (Some old tables have aprons that hang down from the top, making it hard to slide your legs underneath.)
Quality: Last--but certainly not least--buy the best table you can afford. You'll remember the quality long after you've forgotten the price and indeed! A circumstance of receiving a `Heavy Discount` on some selected items purchased through an agent or retailer directly wit bargaining facility to desired customer.
